Agave & Leadership: Lessons from Margaritas
This week’s leadership message is inspired by one of my favorite things: agave spirits — particularly mezcal. I just spent a month in Mexico, the heart of the agave world, and left with a deeper appreciation not only for the craft behind these spirits, but also for the lessons they can offer in leadership.
Whether it’s tequila or mezcal, agave-based spirits have exploded in popularity. In fact, tequila sales alone have grown every year since 2004 — nearly 23 million cases sold in 2020 (source). And with it, the margarita has become an icon. In Colorado, we’re ranked among the top margarita-loving states (source). So let’s mix up a few insights.

🧪 Basic Ingredients Matter — But Balance Is Everything
The classic margarita calls for three simple ingredients: tequila (or mezcal), lime juice, and orange liqueur. It’s not complex — but the balance is what makes it great. Add too much of one thing, and it’s off.
Leadership is the same. Core traits like integrity, empathy, clarity, and vision are essential. But how you blend them — and how you bring your own flavor — is what defines your impact. Some leaders are smooth and subtle; others bring a bold kick. Both can work. Authenticity is the key.
🧂 Not Too Salty
The best margaritas have just a touch of salt on the rim — not the whole thing. Too much, and it can be bitter.
In leadership, a little salt can show honesty, grit, or a willingness to challenge. But too much saltiness — cynicism, bitterness, or passive-aggression — can poison morale. Know when to bring the edge, and when to let it go.
🧊 On the Rocks or Blended?
Some margaritas are served over ice; others are blended smooth. Same drink — different form.
Leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all either. Sometimes the road is rocky — full of unexpected bumps and learning curves. Other times, your success comes from a “blend” of the relationships, experiences, and wisdom you’ve gathered. Don’t expect one style to work all the time. Stay flexible.
🌎 Setting Matters
A frozen margarita hits differently on a beach than it does après ski. Context matters.
Leadership thrives on the same principle. The style that works brilliantly in one environment might fall flat in another. Great leaders read the room, know their people, and adapt accordingly.
At the end of the day, both margaritas and leaders come in countless styles and variations. When the ingredients are right and the moment is well matched, both have the power to energize, inspire, and leave people smiling.
Here’s to bold flavor, thoughtful leadership, and the occasional mezcal margarita. Cheers.
